Kourtaliotiko Gorge Rethymno
The gorge of Kourtaliotis, or Kourtaliotiko, is situated in the south of the municipality, 22 km from the city of Rethymno. It starts from the village Koxare and flows between the mountains Kouroupa (984m) and Ksiro Oros (904m) and ends to the lake of the beautiful beach in Preveli. The enormous rocky hillsides of the gorge reach the 600 meters and they are full of vents and caves, where important species of the fauna live.
Its name “Kourtaliotiko” is given because when the strong wind blows, it creates some whistles when passing through the dimples of the rocks, that are similar to “kourtala” or “krotala” (music instruments for percussion).
The gorge is of unbelievable beauty and the landscape is wild. There is rich flora and fauna and the river is divided into five streams that unite and create small lakes and one huge waterfall!
Indeed, it is worth walking it and seeing the beauty and the wildness of the cretan landscape!
